Miami, Boston, New York, 我来啦! April 28 Carry On: a few thoughts; be passionate, keep pushing.I don't know if struggling and failing makes one a loser; however, I believe that it is not and never too late to correct oneself after making mistakes.
Life is a journey with lures, abstractions, unknowns, and toughness. I doubt if there is a shortcut to the so-called success; I know that, besides joys and happiness, every piece of hardship and perseverance I encounter or pay composes another half of my life.
Long been searching for initiative and courage, I often lost myself and got bewildered by different thoughts and belief, but a place deep inside always holds my dream and faith; hence I realize, it is vital for one not to give up and not fear to dream.
Under no illusion do I believe I can avoid mistakes and stupidness in future; nevertheless, crediting that as great experience for me to become learned and to prevent further foolness would minimize my loss. Afterall, life is really about the experience to pursue, to challenge, to persevere, and to dream.
12:17 Illini Hall 101

February 19 Day goes by...I don't know how to describe the feeling of watching time passing by...
Sometimes I do feel the utmost need of a brave heart to encourage myself speaking out the words:
I will never give up. As I always do.
Many years after, when I recall, I know I will cherish the achievement, and I will never giving up my dream.
It is no matter where you take off or where you land;
Hold your dream, take your step, and you are flying without wings.
And that is what my life all about. A dream. And a petit prince inside my heart.
Wish myself recover soon. Alas.

April 21

The High School Affiliated to Renmin University Of China (Chinese: 中国人民大学附属中学; Pinyin: zhōngguó rénmín dàxué fùshŭ zhōngxué), colloquially Rendafuzhong or RDFZ (Chinese: 人大附中), is the affiliated high school of Renmin University of China, and is one of the most prestigious high school in the People's Republic of China. The High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China (abbreviated to RDFZ) was established in Beijing in 1950. RDFZ is situated in Haidian District of Beijing, and also in the Zhongguancun Science and Technology Zone. And it is among one of the beacon high schools accredited by Beijing municipal Government. Since its establishment in 1950, RDFZ has made tremendous achievements in various fields of secondary education. It has been conferred such titles from China's Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipality Education Commission on numerous occasions as Advanced School of All-round Education with Distinctive Characteristics, School of Full-range Development and Talented Students' Academic Training, Advanced School of Working Skill Education, Municipal Model School for Education in Science and Technology, National Model School for Modern Technology Education, Excellent School for Training Elite Back-up Athletes, Advanced School for Merits in Physical and Health Work, Model School for Demonstrating Green Network, State--level Traditional School for Physical Education. RDFZ is known for having a distinguished faculty which possesses a strong commitment to both teaching and research. It is a highly motivated, innovative and professional team. Among them 23 are special-class teachers, over 170 senior-level teachers, l4 conferred the titles of pillar teachers at the national level, and another 17 at the Beijing municipal level, and 37 recognized as advanced individuals in their disciplines in Haidian District. There are 20 foreign teachers from the United States, Great Britain and other countries. In the past two decades, RDFZ has always come out of top among other schools in Beijing in the aspect of entrance rate into institutions of higher learning, serving as one of the major sources of recruitment for China's famous universities like Tsinghua University, Beijing University, and Renmin University. However, it remains highly controversial that the high school affiliated to renmin university of china should occupy the students leisure time, including the weekends and some public holidays,by forcing them to attend classes. For example, some students from this high school complains that their course-load and homework is almost twice the amount of the students from other key school, such as the affiliated high school of peking university, which is just less than 1000m from High school affiliated to renmin university.

Life is so beautiful.

Gene Control, of Stability, of Spicing, of Localization, of Translatability, and of Pattern Development of Embryo by Genes. 最近两章比较有意思的东西有promoters and enhancers on introns, lytic cycle, lysogenic cycle, retrovirus such as HIV and reverse transcriptase, different types of operon, oncogene and tumor-suppressor genes that of cancer cell, etc.
Review: Wall Street Journal--Jan 30th, 2007
Stock Frenzy in China Stokes Official Concern, by James T. Areddy
Investors pile in, using homes as collateral, tapping credit cards. Data in the article showed that China's stock-market benchmark, the Shanghai Composite Index, rose 130% in 2006 and has continued to soar this year, and the index gained 2.2% to 2945.26 yesterday.
However, it was also mentioned in the article that regulators were concerned by investors', caught up in the stock mania, pledging their homes as collateral for personal loans, or teaming up with merchants to borrow from their credit cards, presumably hoping that stocks will rise enough before the bill comes due to pay off the debt.
Although far from familiar with stocks investment enough to comment anything professionally, I would suggest new comers, especially those people who just rushed into the mania, balance their risks and tradeoff more and take more responsibility in investment, as citied in the article from a midday program of China Central Television Broadcast, even in a bull market, 30% to 40% of people would suffer losses. Also, investors need to be more careful to China government's recent attempts to damp the feverish market. January 18 U Mich Essay BSen Lu DOB: 01/09/1987 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ESSAY B
[B] Discuss an issue of local, national, or international concern. Why is this issue important to you? How do you think it should be addressed?
“Compatriots should be wary of Christmas, should shake off group cultural unconsciousness, and should stand firm for Chinese mainstream culture and traditions.” On December 18th, 2006, ten PhDs from top universities in China signed the manifesto calling for Chinese people to resist Christmas, to “defend against western cultural expansion.” The public reacted apathetically overall, with the exception of the internet poll—more than 50% of Net citizens supported the resistance. When asked by media, one of the advocators pointed his spear to the increasing spread of Christmas commerce in China and to the weakening celebration of Chinese traditional holidays such as Mid-Autumn Festival, Mid-Winter Festival, Double-Ninth Festival, and Festival of Lanterns. As they said, more and more people know less and less about the history and traditions of these holidays; instead, too many Chinese people unreasoningly hug Western holidays, such as Christmas, spending hundreds of dollars without knowing anything about the cultural background. The debate about cultural competition began in the 1980s; with the rapid growth of China’s economy, the controversy quickly grew more severe. Because many Chinese people, especially teenagers, prefer more Western cultures and behave in more occidental ways, scholars fear the danger of China’s traditional culture and ethics fading away. Truly, as the Open Policy has progressed over the years, Western cultures and value systems have increasingly spread and deepened in China; at the same time, conventional Chinese ethical systems such as Confucianism declined drastically. For instance, many students and children are exploring Western holiday celebrations, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, and are attracted by the allure of splendid advertisements and flourishing activities, whereas they pay little attention to the intrinsic cultural value of traditional Chinese ceremonies. China needs to revive its traditional culture and spirit. Simply accusing foreign holidays, however, will harm rather than help China regenerate its traditions. It is not the expansion of Western cultures but a lack of strong and wise methods to promote its own cultural events that causes China’s traditional culture to fade among Chinese people. China needs to enrich and to vivify her own projects, including primary education, traditional holiday activities, and experiential cultural events. By informing its citizens of the original, deeper meanings of Chinese traditions – gathering with family, taking care of parents and elders at Mid-Winter instead of only eating dumplings – China may then lead her people to understand their culture better and to become more confident and more proud of their culture. China should certainly augment her attention on developing Chinese cultural traditions, yet people should not hastily deny all other cultures. There is a French allegory, The Effect of the South Wind, in which North wind and South wind challenge one another to see which of them can force a traveler to pull off his coat. North wind tries intensively, blowing a blizzard onto the traveler. But instead of taking off his coat, the traveler clutches it more tightly around himself. South wind does the reverse, blowing softly, pushing away the clouds and warming the land with sunshine. The traveler feels the warmth, grows hot, and therefore pleasantly takes off his coat. Instead of having battles between different cultures, we should have more understanding and appreciation. For one thing, people should not consider the appearance of other cultures as “invasion,” as when we celebrate the Chinese New Year in New York’s Times Square, we don’t mean to intrude on local residents. For another thing, cultural exchanges and interactions are essential in helping the world unite and develop together. Bertrand Russell once stated: “Interaction between different cultures is the milestone of the development of civilization.” In the 21st century, with globalization further progressing, Chinese people need to be more thoughtful in learning their own traditions, more confident in sharing their own culture, and more magnanimous in appreciating other cultures. I was once a bit nervous to play against Dr. Blessman, my AP Physics teacher and chief instructor of Culver’s Quiz Bowl team, but gradually I took over the situation and moved toward my victory. I was waiting for his surrender. There was silence. I recalculated my strategy, smashing the stalemate. First, I sacrificed one of my “Knights” to break his defense line; second, I used my other “Knight” to hold down his castle, attenuating his protection. Then I took a “nap,” distracted his attention by pretending to organize my “arms” on another side of the board. At last, under the cover of my “Castles,” I directed my “Queen” straight toward his “King.” He had no chance of escape. Dr. Blessman, sitting on the other side, frowned for a while. Bit by bit, he looked up with a relieved smile and surprised me with his move: he drew back his “Bishop” to block my offense, not only holding up my attacks, but also threatening my “Knight.” “Gotcha!” Dr. Blessman chuckled. “Oops . . .” “Still a draw!” Dr. Blessman went on teasing me. “Again?” “Sure!” We rearranged the chessmen and restarted. Although I was forced to draw twice, I’m not giving in—chess with Dr. Blessman is a mental battle I’ll never grow tired of. My Common App EssaySen Lu—Personal Essay
Applicants came in one by one, greeted the interviewer and sat in a row by the table. Seated on the other side, squeezing a bland but tense smile, I watched them settling down, and aimlessly fiddled with papers in my hand. As an assistant interviewer and clerk, I gathered the applicants’ information and prepared to take notes. My adventures in the Beijing 21st Century Science & Technology Development Co., Ltd. started this summer. I had finished my SAT prep courses, and I wanted a short internship to enrich my summer experience and to challenge myself in the real business world. Luckily, 21st STC accepted my application and assigned me to its Human Resources Department; I immediately checked in with Manager Fu. When I was assigned as an assistant interviewer, I realized I could learn life-long lessons. At first I felt nervous facing college graduates since they had already earned bachelor’s degrees and had work experience. But I carefully read the applications and paid full attention to Mrs. Lai, the head interviewer. One of her beginning tasks was for the two dozen job applicants to introduce themselves and to create personal name-cards reflecting their interests and preferences. All the applicants immediately started work, and all soon finished. They put their card designs in front of them and waited to introduce themselves. Mrs. Lai asked them to introduce themselves one at a time. Again, all the applicants finished quickly, not wasting any words. “Anything else?” Mrs. Lai looked around, asking. No one spoke. Later, during a private discussion, Mrs. Fu asked me what I thought about the applicants. “They are professional, and they seemed really smart,” I answered. “What do you think?” “They don’t fit in with our company. Although they have excellent academic records, they’re not strongly interested, they didn’t show initiative.” “But . . . how can you tell that?” “First, none of them told us anything about themselves beyond what was asked. They weren’t interested in showing themselves to us.” She paused, and then continued: “Second, they showed no interest in the company—none of them asked anything about our business or about future opportunities.” A few days later, I was assigned to prepare the paperwork for a seminar. My job was to file documents, check spelling, and put together ancillary materials. I quickly finished the work, reviewed it, then idly sat, watching other people pass by until Mrs. Fu saw me. “Have you finished all the work?” she asked. “Yup,” I replied. “I revised it many times and prepared all the accessories too.” I was hoping for some kind of praise, but Mrs. Fu asked: “What are you planning to do next?” “Err . . .” I fell silent. A drop of sweat glided down my reddish face. I thought about initiative, I thought about being active. I remembered the applicants. Although they were competitive in their professions, they hadn’t shown the best of themselves to 21st STC. I thought about myself. I try new things, I take risks. But I saw that I must no longer wait for chances coming to me. I must actively seek challenges, seek to learn and to explore, seek to create opportunities for myself to carry out my dreams. “Well, can I do anything for you?” I offered. “Hmm . . . let me see . . .” Mrs. Fu smiled. “Can you research the latest data on the training market for employers?” “Yes, Ma’am!” I smiled back. “I’m looking forward to it!” |
